Virus-free Certification Program

grape leaf with virus symptoms More than 50 currently known viruses and uncharacterized virus-like pathogens infect grapevine. Virus and virus-like diseases lead to progressive decline, degeneration and death of grapevines, and shorten the vineyard productive lifespan. The grape certification program is to maintain and distribute virus-free major grape cultivars as a source of healthy cuttings for the regional grape vineries and also to serve the grape nurseries nationally.
Selected grape cultivars: Procedures for generating virus-free grapevines: Procedures for establishing the certified grape block:

Norton/Cynthiana
Vignoles
Vidal blanc
Seyval blanc
Chambourcin
Chardonel
Traminette
Cayuga White
Vivant
St. Vincent

1. Hardwood cuttings are stored at 4 °C for
6-8 weeks.

2.  New shoots are heat treated at the condition of 37°C/18hrs and 22°C/6hrs
for 4 weeks.

3.  The 0.5mm micro-shoot tips are
removed from shoots and cultured on media for 10-18 weeks.

4.  The newly grown vines are transplanted
to sterilized soils and kept in growth chamber for 3 weeks.

5.  The vines are transplanted to soils and grown in greenhouses for two years to produce enough hardwood for propagation.

1.  A foundation block of maintaining the virus-free grapevines is established in the MSFES and serves as a source of mother grapevines.

2.  The propagation of virus-free grapevines from the registered mother grapevines is enhanced in the registered stock block.

3.  The virus-free grapevines for commercial vineyards are propagated in the cooperating nurseries.

4.  The foundation block, registered block and nursery block is registered and inspected with the Missouri Department of Agriculture to comply with the Missouri Plant Law.
