Mulching Blueberries

blueberry plants with hardwood bark mulch Blueberries must be mulched to a depth of 4 to 6 inches, spread in a 3 to 4 foot wide band down the row.  Mulch after planting and replenish the mulch every year.  Mulch materials include bark chips, wood shavings, aged sawdust, pine needles, or other suitable materials.  You may need to add extra nitrogen if you use non-composted sawdust or shavings.

You do not have to worry as much about the pH properties of the mulch as you do about the fertilizer you use or the peat moss (sphagnum) you incorporate in the planting hole.  The mulch is not incorporated around the roots, but is placed above the roots conserving moisture and keeping the roots cooler.
