Blueberry Pest Problems

Young blueberry bushes can be severely stunted if weeds at the base of the plant compete for water and nutrients.  It is very important to keep the area around the base of the plant weed free for the first few years of growth by hand weeding, mulching or using recommended herbicides according to label directions.

Blueberries do not have as many disease and insect problems as some other fruit crops.  Stem blight is caused by a fungus that can also cause diseases on apple trees and thornless blackberry plants.  Blueberries may also be bothered by curculio insects.  You may wish to apply recommended chemicals according to the Missouri Home Fruit Spray Schedule.

The Kemper Center for Home Gardening - Missouri Botanical Garden has information on integrated pest management listed by host or by pest
