Growing Apples for Home Use
Apples are well adapted to Missouri and are
completely winter hardy. The blossoms usually escape late spring freezes.
The major challenge in growing apples in the home garden is the management
of diseases and insect (arthropod) pests. Disease resistant
cultivars should be considered for home use.
Apple
trees have a long life and with proper care can produce for twenty-five
years or more. Yield ranges from 5 to 10 bushels of fruit per mature
tree. The season of harvest extends from July through October in
Missouri.
