Growing Brambles for Home Use
Raspberries and blackberries grow in
Missouri, but raspberries are better suited to the northern part of the
state and blackberries to the southern part. Raspberries are damaged
by the fluctuating high and low winter temperatures of the south and
blackberries cannot tolerate the colder winter temperatures of the north.
Fallbearing raspberries that are mowed down in the dormant season can be
grown in the south.
The brambles are
arranged in 5 groups: The erect, hedge forming blackberries; the
semi-erect blackberries that require a trellis; the summerbearing red
(purple) hedge forming raspberries that bear fruit in June; the black
raspberries; and the fallbearing or everbearing red (yellow) raspberries.
