Growing Pears for Home Use

Pears culture is similar to apple but pears are more susceptible to fireblight, a bacterial disease that attacks pear, apple and other members of the rose family.  Selection of blight resistant cultivars and minimal pruning and fertilization are recommended to grow pears in Missouri.

European pears are the familiar "pear-shaped" pears.  Asian pears are the round "apple pears" with a crisper and juicier texture.    Pear trees can produce for twenty-five years or more with proper care.  Yield ranges up to 5 bushels for a standard size tree.  Enjoy harvesting pears from August through October.
