Maintenance

First year maintenance included the split application of nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium nitrate) in two split applications - 1.5 pounds actual N per 1,000 square feet for herbaceous perennials and 3 pounds actual N per 1,000 square feet for woody perennials.  Some fertilizer burn occurred and plans are to use an organic fertilizer in the future.

Weeding was done manually and one pass through the planting was scheduled every 10 days.

Planting was drip irrigated when rainfall was not adequate.

Second year maintenance application of fertilizer was a Bradfield Organics product that did not burn foliage.  Application was the same rate of nitrogen as in the establishment year.  Drip irrigation was used to supplement rainfall, but was not adequate during the extremely hot weather for approximately 3 weeks in August 2007.
