Pomology is the science of fruit production.  The discipline includes all tree and small fruit crops grown commercially in Missouri.  These are primarily apple, peach, grape, blueberry, blackberry, and strawberry fruits.  My research includes the evaluation of new varieties of fruit, rootstock performance on peach, and annual strawberry culture as an alternative to perennial culture.  This research is applied and conducted in field plantings using replicated experiments.  The desired end result is to formulate recommendations that Missouri growers can use on their farm and in home fruit plantings.  The largest research plantings on the station are of grape.  This often makes this fruit the best choice of a test crop for a Masters’ research project.  Greenhouse and shade house facilities are also used for research projects.

Dr. Martin L. Kaps directs the Pomology Research Program.
